While a very small stretch of land, Berkeley Square is much more than just a picturesque garden. Its serenity contrasts perfectly with the bustling streets that surround it, offering a unique balance of tranquillity and sophistication.

Whether you’re enjoying a stroll through its gardens, exploring the nearby attractions, or dining at one of Mayfair’s finest establishments, Berkeley Square offers an opportunity to enjoy the timeless charm of London.

Behind the curtain

Berkeley Square was originally laid out in the mid 18th century by architect William Kent, becoming one of the earliest planned urban spaces in Mayfair. The square was originally designed to provide an open green area for the affluent residents of the surrounding Georgian townhouses, many of which still stand today. Over the centuries, it has attracted the elite and influential, becoming a favoured address for those living in London.

However, perhaps the most famous resident associated with Berkeley Square is the writer Horace Walpole, who described the square as "a place of repose." The square has also found its way into popular culture, immortalised in the classic jazz standard, ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’.
